Anthony reaches milestone as Thunder beat Pistons

first_imgOklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook (0) reacts after a play during the first half of the team’s NBA basketball game against the Detroit Pistons. APDETROIT — Carmelo Anthony made a free throw for his 25,000th point, and although there was no real reaction from the crowd in Detroit, the Oklahoma City star slapped hands with teammates and raised his right hand with pride.“It’s a special moment,” Anthony said. “To kind of know what it took to get to this point and the amount of work that was put in to get to this point, the teammates that I’ve played with over the years, and for me to still be at a point in my career where I still have a lot more to go.”ADVERTISEMENT Coach Billy Donovan said it’s a patellar tendon injury, and the Thunder would find out more after returning to Oklahoma. The scary injury put a damper on Oklahoma City’s seventh straight victory. It’s the NBA’s longest current winning streak.A group of five Detroit backups helped cut the deficit to nine around the midway point of the fourth, but Oklahoma City was able to hold on.“I think Dre’s situation probably took a lot out of us,” Donovan said. “We lost a little bit there, and rightfully so.”Detroit has dropped seven in a row, the league’s longest current skid. We didn’t do a good job of getting back on defense and we didn’t do a good job on the boards.”HISTORYThe Pistons infamously picked Darko Milicic over Anthony in the 2003 draft, and Anthony hasn’t forgotten.“I was thinking about it after the game, the irony of me getting 25,000 points here in Detroit, knowing after that ’03 draft, what things could have been,” he said.Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next MOST READ Newsome sets focus on helping Bolts open new PBA season on right track Almazan vows to comeback stronger after finals heartbreak OSG plea to revoke ABS-CBN franchise ’a duplicitous move’ – Lacson Nonito Donaire vs Naoya Inoue is BWAA 2019 Fight of the Year George replaces injured Cousins on Team LeBron Anthony became the 21st NBA player to reach the 25,000-point mark , and Russell Westbrook added 31 points, 13 assists and 11 rebounds to lift the surging Thunder to a 121-108 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday (Sunday Manila time). Police hunting suspects in North Ruimveldt drive-by shooting

first_imgFormer murder accused: Leon Duncan also called “Whistle”As investigations continue into the gunning down of former murder accused Leon Duncan also called “Whistle”, the police are yet to make an arrest but have indicated that they are hunting for persons of interest.Duncan along with his brother and two friends were gambling at Williamstaad Road, Festival City, North Ruimveldt when they were shot at.During a telephone interview on Friday, acting Crime Chief Michael Kingston explained that detectives are currently hunting for specific individuals who they believe are either involved or connected directly to the fatal shooting.“There are no arrests in this matter as yet. But there are some persons of interests that we are looking for right now,” he stated.Twenty-nine-year-old “Whistle” was killed in a drive-by while his brother, Shaquile, and two others, Orande Gordon and Lance Simon, were injured.Based on information received, the four men were at the corner of the street, engrossed in their card game, when an unmarked car pulled up alongside them and the occupants opened fire.It was reported that the men exited the car, stood over “Whistle” and opened fire. He was reportedly shot several times. He, along with others, was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. His brother, who was reportedly shot to his leg, along with Simon and Gordon, were admitted to the medical facility. The police are on the hunt for the car as they launched an investigation.Back in 2017, “Whistle” was charged for the attempted murder of Ceon Nedd and Geoffrey Farrell. Region 10 youths inspired through FTCSF’s “Empower U” initiative

first_imgHundreds of youths from across the Linden community and other parts of Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) are actively involved and are being positively inspired through an “Empower U” initiative spearheaded by Linden-based non-governmental organisation (NGO), For The Children Sake Foundation (FTCSF).A number of programmes were conducted in Linden recently, including the “Empower U” youth conference and a series of youth camps in riverine communities across the region.FTCSF Director, Tisha CampbellThe annual youth conference, which was held at the Lichas Hall, saw over 200 of the community’s youths in attendance. This was conducted in collaboration with the Office of Linden Mayor Waneka Arindell and the Family and Adolescent Health Units of the Public Health Ministry, the Maternal Child Health Department, Department of Youth, Linden Fund USA and the Ministry of the Presidency. The event was held under the theme, “To Empower, Encourage and Inspire” and featured a number of motivational speakers and activities aimed at youth development in several areas.Youths in attendance at the “Empower U” conference at the Lichas HallFTCSF Executive Director Vernon Todd explained that the primary goal of the conference was to bring together leaders and professionals as well as friends and partners of Linden and across the country in open dialogue with the aim of discussing issues youths face on a daily basis. In addition, it was used to develop possible strategies to allow youths to become aware and more engaged in initiatives taking place in Region 10.Young people from riverine areas in Region 10 engaged in activities during the camps“We believe that our diverse and dynamic group of speakers provided in-depth insight, as well as actionable and practical tools of engagement, ‘Models, Methods and Mechanisms’ (3Ms) that have worked in other regions; and were able to share how the 3Ms could be utilised to aid the youths to become more effective in the ongoing development efforts of Region 10 in key areas such as healthcare, investment, politics, education and outreach”, he noted.Director of the organization, Tisha Campbell said the aim of the initiative, which was birthed by the organisation last year, was conducted in keeping with the theme.“We live in a society where, if you open the papers you see a lot of suicide, there’s a lot of gender-based violence, abuse, rape and all these things. So, the whole objective is basically to empower adolescents. We want to be able to encourage them to speak out; empower them to develop personally, professionally…so different persons are here to inspire, share their experiences and to basically impart knowledge to empower our adolescents”, she noted.Campbell hailed the successful engagements with participants, who were educated on aspects such as self-love and empowered to be leaders and agents for positive change. She stressed that there is a range of ongoing initiatives hosted by the organisation as it continues to work towards capacity-building.Presently, there is an active youth organisation based at One Mile, Wismar, Linden, where youth-friendly sessions are hosted on Fridays and Saturdays. This programme is open to all interested youths. Campbell said youths also get the opportunity to become peer educators which also aids in capacity-building in dealing with social and health-related issues. It also gives an opportunity for assisting other adolescents and persons within the community. Other initiatives include the “Youth seeking answers” programme, which is also open to all adolescents. Interested persons can text or call 699-2286 and ask any health-related or socially-related questions and also receive counselling. There are also additional programmes targetting community development. The Ministry of the Presidency Department of Youth in collaboration the FTCSF, Region 10 Department of Education and Linden Fund USA also recently hosted a series of Youth camps at Aroaima, Coomacka and Rockstone under the “Empower U” initiative.Todd also encouraged the community’s youths to become volunteers as he stressed the importance of volunteerism.“Volunteer work gives youth knowledge, experience, social identity and new skills. Voluntary work also builds a sense of community, improves the daily lives of many people and promotes social development…It is more important than ever to maintain a strong focus on human rights, strong and universal educational systems, stimulate entrepreneurship and cooperation with the Private Sector for increased job creation.Worldwide, young people make up a quarter of the world’s population. You are a driving force behind change…”, he noted. (Utumu Belle)last_img read more

‘Crackhead’ confesses to murdering 5 fishermen

first_imgPiracy massacreAs investigations continue into the deadly pirate attack that has left at least 14 persons missing and four dead, the main suspect, ‘Crackhead’, who was arrested on Sunday last in Suriname, has reportedly confessed to killing five of the fishermen before throwing them overboard.Wanted in connection with the attack, during interrogation the man told Surinamese law enforcement officers that he was the ring leader in the recent spate of piracy attacks in Surinamese waters.Mastermind in pirate attack: CrackheadReports coming out of Suriname have suggested that Crackhead also told Police that robbery was not a motive for the attacks, but he was just following orders — orders to attack the boat and “get rid” of the occupants.Although a confession statement was signed by the suspect, the Police are continuing their investigations, as they have confirmed that 27 others are being questioned. During ‘Crackhead’s confession, he did not provide names of his accomplices. To date, four bodies have been recovered from the attacks, the most recent being that of Gavin Outar, 33, of 18 Sheet Anchor, East Canje, Berbice. His partially decomposed body washed up at the Number 63 Beach, Corentyne, Berbice on Thursday. At the time of the discovery, the body was clad in a pair of blue ¾pants and bore a tattoo on the left chest. Based on description of the tattoo, a cousin of the dead man turned up with a photograph of Outar sporting the same tattoo. His body was taken to the Skeldon Hospital mortuary to await a post mortem. Sources told Guyana Times that it seems as though Outar was stabbed before he was thrown overboard. At a joint press conference on Monday last in Suriname, Justice and Police Minister Stuart Faith reported that 30 persons have been arrested. It was reported that a boat owner who reported the robbery to the Police described the men he recognised during the brutal attack on the fishermen, one of whom was the prime suspect ‘Crackhead’.He reportedly told the Police that it was ‘Dick’, ‘Bolo’, ‘Crackhead’, ‘Sanbad’ and another man he did not know who had carried out the attack. The owner also related that the suspects are all Guyanese. On Sunday, Public Security Minister Khemraj Ramjattan led a team to the neighbouring country, where he had the opportunity to meet with the relatives of the missing men. During his visit, Ramjattan recognised the need for improved Coast Guard warning systems and information sharing.Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo, who led a team to Suriname, described the attacks as acts of terrorism, and called upon the Governments of Guyana and Suriname to work together in addressing the horrific incidents. He urged that the full force of the law be used to bring the perpetrators to justice. Two Saturdays ago, four boats were attacked by a group of men, who brutalised the occupants then threw them overboard. Two days later, another boat was attacked, and the captain was killed. The crew is still missing. Those identified as missing are Ramesh Sanchara, Ganesh Persaud, Vickey Persaud, Glenroy Jones, Bharat Heralall, Ralph Anthony, and Tiaknauth Mohabir. The three bodies that were initially recovered are yet to be positively identified.last_img read more

How Michael Owen won the Ballon d’Or WITHOUT being crowned the world’s best footballer

first_img 5 5 5 5 So it was that in 2010 the Ballon d’Or was merged with the World Player of the Year, and would henceforth be known as the FIFA Ballon d’Or, as the premier accolade for recognising the world’s best player. The FIFA Ballon d’Or winner receives the same golden ball trophy awarded for the old European Footballer of the Year award, but it is now a truly global trophy.Cast your vote here for the 2014 Ballon d’Or winner And the 2008 Ballon d’Or winner… But in most years the FIFA World Player of the Year and the Ballon d’Or winner were one and the same, including every year from 2005 to 2009.For example, Cristiano Ronaldo was the 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year… Did Michael Owen win the Ballon d’Or? The answer is yes, but without being crowned the best player in world football. Read on to find out how this happened… Michael Owen: 2001 Ballon d’Or winner Owen was awarded the 2001 Ballon d’Or for a miraculous calendar year that saw him score 31 goals for Liverpool and pick up five winner’s medals.Aged just 21, Owen put the disappointment of being an unused sub in Liverpool’s 2001 League Cup final win behind him to score two dramatic late goals and snatch the FA Cup final from Arsenal’s grasp.Prior to that he had chipped in with a crucial brace against soon-to-be Italian champions Roma in a UEFA Cup win in Rome, en route to claiming the Reds’ first European trophy in 17 years.Owen’s 18 Premier League goals in 2001 helped Liverpool qualify for the Champions League for the first time since the competition had evolved from the old European Cup.And he scored as Gerard Houllier’s side beat Premier League champions Manchester United and Champions League winners Bayern Munich in the Charity Shield and UEFA Super Cup, respectively.Perhaps most memorably of all, Owen put another three past Bayern’s Oliver Kahn a week after the Super Cup final, when the goalkeeper was playing for Germany against England in a 5-1 victory for the Three Lions in Munich. All of which convinced a panel of sports journalists from around Europe to award Owen the 2001 Ballon d’Or, ahead of Real Madrid’s Raul. But it wasn’t the Ballon d’Or which Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Manuel Neuer hope to claim in January, having been shortlisted for the 2014 prize that will crown the world’s best player this year.Instead, the original Ballon d’Or – which ran from 1956 to 2009 – was an award organised by France Football magazine and given to the European Footballer of the Year.Until 1995, only European players playing for European clubs were eligible for the original Ballon d’Or, meaning the likes of Pele and Diego Maradona weren’t considered for the honour, despite the latter playing for Napoli with distinction (although both players were later awarded honorary Ballon d’Ors).Africa’s George Weah became the first non-European winner in 1995, thanks to his form with AC Milan, while Owen’s 2001 win was the fourth for an English player after Sir Stanley Matthews (the inaugural winner in 1956), Sir Bobby Charlton (1966) and Kevin Keegan (twice, in 1978 and 1979).Meanwhile, in 1991 FIFA introduced a global award to crown the world’s best player, with Germany’s 1990 World Cup-winning captain Lothar Matthaus the first winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year.A decade later, Portugal’s Luis Figo was crowned FIFA World Player of the Year (with David Beckham as runner up and Raul third, pictured below), while Ballon d’Or winner Owen finished eighth in the voting. 5last_img read more

GAA NEWS: GLENSWILLY RESERVES ENJOY GOOD LEAGUE WIN OVER DUNGLOE

first_imgOur senior reserve team had a busy weekend, beginning on Friday evening past with a league fixture away to Dungloe. The Glen boys started well and maintained a solid performance throughout. Leading from start to finish, they ended the evening with a 1-14 to 1-07 victory in a very entertaining game.On Sunday both reserve and senior teams travelled to Falcarragh to play Cloughaneely. A victory for the reserves would have given them the title of winners of the Div.2 reserve league. However, playing against a strong wind in the first half the Glen went in trailing 0-7 to 1-01 at half time. In the second half Glenswilly applied much pressure on the home side. The Glen Boys however were not finding the target from free kicks awarded to them and while they did bring the game level at 1-05 to 0-08 with minutes remaining, a penalty awarded to Cloughaneely, which was converted, gave the home side a victory on a final score of 1-08 to 1-05.The senior team played with the wind to their backs in the first half and went in leading 1-07 to 0-02 at half time in their game. Ruari Crawford getting the goal while Michael Murphy, Neil Gallagher, Colin Kelly, Gary”copper”McFadden and Darren McGinley all contributing points. The final score being 1-13 to 1-04. An interesting fact is the Glen men took 1-11 from play while Cloughaneely scores came from three 45’S ,1 point from play and 1 from a free. A very disciplined and solid performance for the Glen boys. With no fixtures this coming week, the next outing for the seniors will be McCumhaill park on Sunday 15th for a half 2 throw in against Kilcar in the Championship, one that we are all looking forward too.In the Div.5 league Glenswilly played St Eunans. The Letterkenny boys were successful in this one, winning by 1-13 to the Glens 1-07.Our U-13 team had a game with Convoy on Sunday morning. The Convoy lads were the victors in this game, but better luck next time boys. The next club monthly meeting will be on Monday 9th of September in the club house. The winning Lotto numbers this week are 8,9,14 and 20. Match 3 winner is Shane McDevitt. New Cisco Connect Cloud Enrages Users Over Privacy Issues

first_imgWhile interesting on paper, the actual launch has not gone well since rollout on June 26. Using the new service requires either a manual update to the firmware on Cisco’s E2700, E3500 or E4500 routers, or an automatic update to that firmware. But because the Automatic Firmware Update setting is activated by default when these routers are shipped, a lot of customers have suddenly been stuck with a very new interface to their router controls – even without specifically choosing to update their systems. Worse, it wasn’t just a jarring new interface: To use Connect Cloud, users have to also register for a Cloud Service account. To make matters worse, it appears that even users who wanted to manually update their firmware were having problems. The Real Damage Is to PrivacyBut the real damage from this product debut goes beyond the technology. Sharp-eyed users almost immediately noticed this controversial clause buried in the Connect Cloud privacy policy (cached):“When you use the Service, we may keep track of certain information related to your use of the Service, including but not limited to the status and health of your network and networked products; which apps relating to the Service you are using; which features you are using within the Service infrastructure; network traffic (e.g., megabytes per hour); internet history; how frequently you encounter errors on the Service system and other related information (‘Other Information’)”The notion that Cisco would be monitoring users’ traffic and usage patterns is hugely unsettling to Cisco customers, who have become very vocal in their disapproval.Cisco has since removed the offending clause from the privacy policy, and Brett Wingo, General Manager of Cisco’s Home Networking Business unit, posted a mea culpa blog entry Friday that backed off the idea that Cisco would be doing active monitoring, as well as apologizing for the lack of clarity in the service’s opt-in/opt-out policies. Cisco has also posted instructions on how to rollback to the Classic EA series firmware.Apologies Not EnoughUsers are not yet assuaged by the changes, particularly since pointed questions still remain about additional language in the Cisco Connect Cloud Terms of Service.“You agree not to use or permit the use of the Service: (i) to invade another’s privacy; (ii) for obscene, pornographic, or offensive purposes; (iii) to infringe another’s rights, including but not limited to any intellectual property rights; (iv) to upload, email or otherwise transmit or make available any unsolicited or unauthorized advertising, promotional materials, spam, junk mail or any other form of solicitation; (v) to transmit or otherwise make available any code or virus, or perform any activity, that could harm or interfere with any device, software, network or service (including this Service); or (vi) to violate, or encourage any conduct that would violate any applicable law or regulation or give rise to civil or criminal liability.”Tellingly, those Terms still reserve Cisco’s right to terminate your account for violations, which could include “any related data, information, and files, and bar any further access to such data, information, and files through use of the Service. Such action may include, among other things, accessing your data and/or discontinuing your use of the Service and any and all rights granted to you in connection with the Service without refund or compensation.” Many customers are looking at that clause and wondering why, if Cisco is really not going to monitor its users’ content, what is a clause like that doing in the Terms of Service? On the surface, this could appear to be a breach of privacy pretty much on par with the traffic-monitoring clause that was lopped off of the Privacy Policy.Legal Escape Clause?More likely, though, this is probably little more than a legal escape clause for Cisco. On the off chance that someone were to try to sue the network hardware vendor because such illicit activities were being enabled by Cisco’s Connect Cloud service, the company could try to defend itself by pointing to these terms in a court of law as proof that it told its users not to be naughty. One big takeaway from this incident is another reminder not to ignore the terms of service and other legal documentation that comes with your software, hardware and services – especially cloud-based services. It may be tedious, but aggressive monitoring policies like the one Cisco may have tried to slip in makes it clear that this kind of diligence may be as necessary as regularly checking your systems for malware. For Cisco, the incident is a black eye that demonstrates the difficulties a company can face when it transitions from selling hardware directly to large enterprises to selling services and equipment to consumers and small businesses. 3 Areas of Your Business that Need Tech Now The debut of Cisco’s Connect Cloud service this week has been marred by technical problems and some serious disconnects between user expectations of privacy and Cisco’s apparent eagerness to monitor user data. The new Connect Cloud service is Cisco’s attempt to introduce a new way for home and small-business owners to manage their Internet routers. Past methods, such as a browser-based interface to a control server within the router itself or an installed application on a network-connected machine, have been local. Cisco’s new service will be based remotely, enabling users to manage their router’s settings in the cloud.
